-Book:The Forgotten Trinity by James White
-The word “Trinity” is not in the Bible, but the concept is. Other examples of words but concepts in the Bible is “omnicience” “Omnipotence” “rapture”.
-Trinity= Tri-Unity. 3 who’s in 1 what. 3 in one. Not tri-thiesm (three gods)/polythiesm (many gods).
-”monothiesm” is belief in one God
Doctrine of the Trinity: Three persons in one being. God is the father, the son, the holy spirit. The son isn’t the father or holy spirit. The holy spirit isn’t the father or the son. All three = one god.
-monothiesm in the Bible (one God) (few of many examples)
Verses
–Deut 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
– Isaiah 44:6-8 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any.”
–Isaiah 43:10 “You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.
–Isaiah 45:21-22 Declare and present your case; let them take counsel together! Who told this long ago? Who declared it of old? Was it not I, the LORD? And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none besides me. “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.
Father as God=usually everyone agrees who the father is
– 1Peter 1:2 (contains all 3)according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
–Matt 3:16 (contains all 3)And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
Jesus as God= truly human and truly God (not 100% human and 100% God. Bible doesn’t use percentages)
–Col 2:8-9 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
–Titus 2:13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, (“God and Savior Jesus Christ” is referring to one person, not two. This is more apparent in the Greek. See Granville Sharp Rule for reading the greek.
–2Peter 1:1 Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
–2Peter 1:11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (notice difference between this and 1:1= Lord and Savior/God and Savior).
–John 13:19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. (in original, it says “I am” not “I am he”. The “he” was added.)(Jesus is referring to the I am- a good reason to be stoned here. Blasphemy)
–John 8:24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am [he], you will die in your sins.”
–John 8:58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
–Rev 1:17-18 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. (Jesus is talking here) compare to God speaking: Rev 21:6-7 And he (he who sits on the throne) said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
–Rev 22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (Jesus is speaking here). Notice, God refers to himself as being the first and the last inIsaiah 44:6 :Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.
–John 20:28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” (which was commended by Jesus in next verse:John 20:29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”)
–John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (NoteJohn 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.)
-In John 18:5-8 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” (‘he’ is added. The original greek ‘ego eimi’ is only “I am”)
–Matt 26:64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” (He is saying he is the Cloud Rider of Daniel 7:13-14 :“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.)
Holy Spirit as God
–Isaiah 48:16 Draw near to me, hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there.” And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and his Spirit. (all three in this verse)
–Zech 12:10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. (God is speaking. Who is pierced?) (all 3 in this verse)
–Acts 5:3-4 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
–Acts 13:2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”
–Acts 10:19 And while Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you.
–Matt 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (“name” is singular. Basically saying “baptise them in God”)
Holy Spirit is not a force.
–He guides, testifies, speaks, clarifies, discloses, and glorifies Christ
–can be blashphemied (Mark 13:24 “But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,)
–can be grieved (Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.)
–can be insulted (Heb 10:29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?)
More things to take note of:
-When Jesus prays to the Father, it’s clear he’s praying to the Father, the other person of his being.
-Jesus as son= as the person “son” in relation to the Father and holy spirit. The 2nd person of the same God.
-Jesus has set aside his glory temporarily. John 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed and in Phil 2:6-11 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
