Exodus 17 1st |
-at Rephidim (had left Desert of Zin) -blamed Moses. “Contended with Moses”. “Give us water to drink. Why have you brought us out of Egypt-to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst.” -Moses cries out to the Lord. “What should I do with these people. They are about to stone me.” -God says: “Go on before the people and take with thee of the elders of Israel, and they rod, wherewith you smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go. -Behold, I will stand on top the rock in Horeb -thou shall smite the rock -there shall come water out of it, and the people may drink.” -Moses did so in the sight of the elders. -called the place Massah and Meribah because they chided and tempted the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” |
Numbers 20 2nd |
-In Desert of Zin in Kadesh -1st month of the year -Right after Miriam’s death -blamed Moses and Aaron “that we and our cattle should die here? This evil place. No place of seed, figs, vines, pomegranates, no water. -Moses and Aaron left the presence of the assembly, went to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and fell on their faces. -Glory of the Lord appeared to them there. –God says: “Take the rod and gather thou the assembly together, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, and it shall give forth his water and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.” -Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as He had commanded him. -Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation before the rock -Moses said: “Hear now, ye rebels, must we fetch you water out of this rock?” -Moses lifted his hand and with his rod he smote the rock twice -water came out abundantly and the congregation drank, and their beasts -Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: “Because you believed me not, to sanctify my in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them. This is the water of Meribah, because the children of Israel strove with the Lord and he was sanctified in them.” |
Differences:
-In first, God stood on the rock. Only the elders witnessed it.
-who’s rod in each?
-Moses stroke rod twice in 2nd.
-tent tabernacle or structure? Not capitalized.
Notes:
-word for “rock” is different in Exo 17 and Num 20. In Num 20 is is an ‘elevated’ rock, had already been smitten. Christ died once, no need to die again.
-2nd time: God was not angry, but Moses gave the impression that He was, so he failed to be a good witness for God and wasn’t faithful with God’s intent.
-God was setting up a model for us. We can now pray to God, speak it Him whenever. Only after He was first smitten.
-why did God even instruct Moses to use his rod if he wasn’t supposed to smite it?
-Moses says ‘we’ in vs 10, smote the rock twice the 2nd time. God chastised both Moses and Aaron.
